Princeton Wines at the White House

Tuesday, October 29 8:00 PM

The Princeton Club of Hilton Head invites Tigers to an exploration of White House wines with a Princeton connection.

Lisa N. Drakeman *88 S*88 P’02 h’35 will lead the tasting. She is a Certified Sommelier, who holds an expert Diploma with Merit

from the world's leading wine educator, the Wine and Spirits Education Trust.

Wines to purchase for the virtual tasting:

  • Louis Jadot Macon-Villages: JFK’39 may not have lasted long at Princeton, but he made it to the White House anyway, where he often served fine white wines from Burgundy, France.
  •
  • Beaulieu BV Napa Cabernet Sauvignon: Woodrow Wilson 1879 was a fan of Cabernets from Bordeaux, but when he ushered in Prohibition, he paradoxically spurred massive growth for Beaulieu’s California Cabs. Find out why, and try a red wine served by several presidents.
  •
  • Blandy’s 5-year Malmsey Rich Madeira:  James Madison 1771, *1772, bought 100s of gallons at a time. Sample a favorite of our 1st Graduate Alum, 1st President of the Alumni Association, and 4th President of the U.S. Try it with a Cadbury Caramello chocolate bar.

These wines should be available locally. Alternatively, you can order them at wine.com or totalwine.com.

Alternates: Wente Vineyards wines have regularly been featured at the White House. Fifth generation wine grower Christine Wente ’97 currently serves as Board Chair.
