UPDATE - "Precept" with John Matteson '83
John's book has impressive scope and some of us are having trouble getting through the entire work before the precept. To help us out, John has graciously suggested that we focus this precept on selected portions of the book. In honor of New England natives, he has decided that he will concentrate on the stories of Holmes and Whitman. He recommends that attendees try to read the following excerpts:
- PREFACE: pp. xiii-xvii.
- HOLMES: pp. 3-31; 83-91; 207-15; 394-409.
- WHITMAN: pp. 60-82; 251-60; 335-358.
- (That’s already somewhat over 100 pages, but those who are thirsty for more may also want to read the pertinent pages of the epilogue: pp. 410-22; 433-34.)
Two weeks following his talk on his book A Worse Place than Hell, PANE will host a "Precept" with author John Matteson '83 to discuss the book and the cultural impact of the Civil War.
